What does being a dad mean to you?
If you’ve ever thought to yourself, "Is being a dad the most significant part of who I am?" or "How does my partner view their parenting role?" then this article is for you.

A recent study by Pew Research Centre (2022) has shed some light how we perceive our roles as parents. If you’ve ever thought to yourself, "Is being a dad the most significant part of who I am?" or "How does my partner view their parenting role?" then this article is for you.
The Pew Centre study revealed that a whopping 85% of dads say being a parent is the most or one of the most important aspects of their identity. Cheers to that! 🍻 But here's where it gets interesting. A larger portion of moms, 35% to be exact, say it's the most important part of who they are, compared to 24% of dads. So, while we're all aboard the parenting train, there's some variation in how we're riding it.

Now, before we get all defensive or think some dads aren’t giving the parenting role the importance it deserves, let's break this down a bit.
1. A Balancing Act
First and foremost, being a dad is phenomenal, but it's just one of the many hats we wear. We're also husbands, employees/business owners, friends, the unofficial family IT guy, and sometimes the resident spider killer (someone has to do it, right?). It's a balancing act, and how we juggle these roles shapes our identity.
2. Cultural Expectations and Changing Times
Traditionally, dads have been painted as the breadwinners, the stoic figures of the household. While that narrative is rapidly changing, some of us might still be navigating the waters between being the "provider" and the "nurturer." How we see our value within the home can have a big impact on how we stake our identity as fathers.
3. Your Definition of “Dad”
Every dad's journey is unique. Some of us might resonate more with the title of "Dad," while others might find equal importance in other roles. And that's perfectly okay. The key is to embrace our journey, learn, grow, and ensure we're there for our kids, showing up as the best version of ourselves. It all comes down to what your personal definition of success is a father. It’s different for everyone.
In the grand scheme of things, whether you're Team "Parenting is the most important" or Team "It's one of the most important aspects," the main takeaway here is to being the best dad you can be is important to nearly every Dad. And that’s something worth celebrating. 🎉
