The Dadurday Book Club: Fostering a Love for Reading at Every Age
In the digital age, where screens reign supreme, instilling a love of reading in our kids is more important (and challenging) than ever.
In the digital age, where screens reign supreme, instilling a love of reading in our kids is more important (and challenging) than ever. Here are some tips to help guide you and your mini-you’s through a reading journey that aligns with your child's age and interests, sparking conversations, and creates priceless father-child moments.
For the Tiny Tots (Ages 0-5)
Book Picks: 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' by Eric Carle, 'Where the Wild Things Are' by Maurice Sendak, ’The Little Blue Truck’ by Alice Schertle, ‘The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear‘ by Audrey Wood
Reading Rituals: Make reading to your little ones part of the bedtime routine. Snuggled up, away from the digital world, these stories can be a gateway to dreamland.
Engage and Excite: Use voices, make faces, and even have little discussions about the pictures. It's all about making books a fun and interactive experience.
The Curious Grade Schoolers (Ages 6-8)
Book Picks: 'Charlotte’s Web' by E.B. White, 'The Magic Tree House' series by Mary Pope Osborne,
Become a Story Explorer: At this age, kids start reading independently. Encourage them by choosing books that align with their interests, be it dinosaurs or space.
Reading Together: While they might start reading on their own, don’t stop reading to them. This continues to build their listening and comprehension skills, as well as your bond together.
The Thoughtful Tweens (Ages 9-12)
Book Picks: 'Harry Potter' series by J.K. Rowling, 'Percy Jackson' series by Rick Riordan
Book Club Time: Start a mini book club. Read the same book and have weekly discussions. It's a great way to connect and share perspectives.
Respect Their Choices: They might pick books you wouldn’t, and that's okay. It's about fostering a love for reading, not directing it.
The Teenage Years (Ages 13+)
Book Picks: 'The Catcher in the Rye' by J.D. Salinger, 'To Kill a Mockingbird' by Harper Lee, ‘How to Win Friends and Influence People’ by Dale Carnegie, ‘7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens’ by Steven Covey, ‘A Growth Mindset for Teens’ by Sydney Sheppard
Deep Dives: Now's the time for books that challenge and provoke thought. Use these as springboards for deeper conversations about life, values, and the world.
Encourage Exploration: Encourage them to explore different genres. Biographies, science fiction, or even non-fiction can provide new perspectives and insights.
Setting Up a Stress-Free Reading Routine
Lead by Example: Show them that reading isn’t just a kid's activity. Let them see you read.
Designate a Reading Time: Even if it’s just 20 minutes a day, having a set time for reading can help in making it a habit.
Create a Reading Space: A cozy corner with good lighting and a comfy chair can be inviting. Make it a special 'no-screen zone' for everyone.
Pages as Currency: If you’re serious about your kids becoming passionate readers, you could consider adopting Patrick Bet David’s approach to using pages as currency in your home.
Final Word
Books are not just about reading; they're doorways to new worlds, ideas, and discussions. As dads, when we share these journeys with our kids, we're not just teaching them to read; we're teaching them to think, dream, and imagine. So, let's turn the pages together and see where the story takes us!
